The Grammar Scope and Sequence in the Al-Madina Curriculum

Workshop title: Grammar Scope and Sequence in the Al-Madina Curriculum: A Critical Review and Revision

Place: Online

Presenter Overview: Mrs. Alaa Amouneh

Workshop theme: What is the grammar scope and sequence in the al-Madina curriculum?

It is a way to organize and classify grammar into the levels and units of a curriculum.

How did we create a new grammar scope and sequence for our curricula?

  1. First, we had a meeting with 18 teachers who have taught the curriculum and we collected their feedback and analyzed it.
  2. Second, we assigned a group of our curriculum editors to examine the most critical points received from the feedback. The grammar section had the majority of required adjustments especially regarding the way of presentation and cumulative impact, in addition to grammar level division.
  3. Third, we conducted meetings with the curriculum Curriculum designers, the administration, and other assistant teachers to discuss the outcomes we should work on.

Seven educational series of teaching Arabic to non native speakers – mostly to children- were studied by our teachers. The focus was on the grammar sections and how they are presented and divided into the different language levels. These grammar sections were compiled into a single serial file, and a few sections were selected to be added to the Madinat Al-Arabiya (City of Arabic) curriculum. Based on our previous work, the new additions, and the analysis of many foreign educational series using the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages CEFR, we created a new grammar scope and sequence from novice to the fifth level in a gradual and logical grammar teaching sequence.
